“MANY OF THEM raises the question: how can we use technology to create togetherness and not separation, love and not suspicion, a common future and not isolation?”
Drawing on the phone, using virtual reality to plan an exhibition, sending a sketch of a hat overseas via fax, doing fittings through Facetime, scanning a handmade fabric and altering it digitally, using an app to find out the name of a flower—these are some of the everyday actions linked to technology that artists, designers and filmmakers use in their work today. But these are not innocent gestures; the contributors to Issue #8 of MANY OF THEM are well aware of the ideological, economic, and political implications of advanced technologies and their position in the world.
The question that we pose on the cover of the current issue—which arises from a reflection by the poet ETEL ADNAN, cited by HANS ULRICH OBRIST in our conversation with him—is answered, indirectly, by the contributors to the magazine through their world-making practices, whether by building bridges between a furniture piece and a sculpture, between a sculpture and a handbag, between the digital and the analog, or between the hand and the machine. In sum, they all point to the connection between art and technology as a relationship that is always rewritten in the present.
Plus, in this issue multiple interviews and fashion stories were created in collaboration with, TAKASHI HOMMA, HANS ULRICH OBRIST, KATJA RAHLWES, MISHA KAHN, LAWRENCE LEK, ARI VERSLUIS, KYOTARO, RUSHEMY BOTTER & LISI HERREBRUGH, ERWIN WURM, STEPHEN JONES, WINTER VANDENBRINK, AUSTIN LEE, MATTHEW WILLIAMS, APICHATPONG WEERASETHAKUL, ANTONIO MACARRO, HILARY LLOYD and DEA KULUMBEGASHVILI.
