About
The Toe Rag is a quarterly print magazine covering contemporary culture, spanning visual art, music, architecture, theatre, performance, fashion, politics and literature.
Founded in December 2023, we publish work that is formally ambitious, considered and incisive. Our issues feature essays, reviews, interviews, fiction, poetry and art. Our back pages include event listings, puzzles, games, an agony aunt and a Page 3.
Issue 5, Spring 2025
TECHNOLOGY
This issue is about algorithms and luddites, hormones and travel agencies, memes and mass surveillance. It parses the colonial legacy of printmaking’s blind embossings, a history of ice from an artist melting in Miami, dancers writhing with their digital doppelgängers, pheromone colognes designed to engineer consent, the Airbnb-as-gallery that reproduces commodified impermanence and Hannah Weiner’s fragmented texts. Our contributors expose the contradictions of technological progress – the mix of gains and losses, freedoms and fractures that accompany each new invention. Together, they form a constellation of this paradox: the tools once designed to simplify life now constitute its complexity.
