Lucas Samaras

Life is never static. Life means movement, blood flows, time is fleeting, and death marks yet another journey. In Greek mythology paying the ferryman on the final river to oblivion.

The late Greek artist Lucas Samaras was a master of fluidity. He changed artistic media, from the liquidity of paint, to development fluids of the photographic darkroom. He used liquids to alter his images, morphing his own face to fit the ever changing pictures in his mind. His lens recorded the flow of his own life.

How we call ourselves is fluid: the names on our birth certificate, the names our friends call us, the names we give ourselves, all given or chosen to reflect the changes in our lives. Just as what we do changes, so how we look, think and perform changes.

Tears of laughter, tears of sadness, tears of joy, the physical waterworks of life ebb and flow with our experiences. While the steady pumping of blood in our veins keeps us going until we all literally dry out.

Torbjørn Rødland

The photographic works of Torbjørn Rødland are a moveable feast for your eyes. The subject matter is caught in the moment, but starts to alter in your imagination. Changing and warping, sneakily shapeshifting, his photographs give the illusion of reality, when in fact the realism of the images are just a shudder away from the surreal.

“Liquid is where bodily life comes from. It’s the source. Maybe I shouldn’t use this as an argument against digital photography but it does make sense that images rising from liquids have a special power. I also sometimes add liquids to surfaces before photographing them in order to increase tactility and excite the imagination. I think we can also say that liquids are associated with intuition and the unconscious mind.”
