160 pages, perfect bound, and printed in full colour on FSC approved uncoated 120gsm paper in the United Kingdom.
Backwash Issue Two is a surf anthology featuring Japan, the photography of Chris Burkard and Sergio Villalba, Hamish Laing and Woody Gooch. Kalani Lattanzi swims at Nazare, whilst Amy Kotch surfs barrels whilst pregnant and John Peck knee paddles out as he has done since 1958. Mickey Smith writes on the supersonic Ben Player, shot by Jack Johns. We feature Zio Ziegler and Chippa Wilson, Sam Bleakley and Michael Kew. Fergal confronts the topic of mental illness. In Japan we encounter David Kinoshita, Brad Gerlach, Tina Bingham, Nisi, Hiromichi Soeda. Harrison Roach, Mike Lay and Jamie Brisick give their perspective. Joni Sternbach's portfolio stops the clock. Curate is packed with Kaineder, Groves, Proud, Borrow and we conclude with Demi Taylor on being a bodysurfer. The last spread is devoted to a poem by the musician Gavin Clark, RIP.
Backwash is a glorious, chaotic ensemble of surfing as we see it. The core of Issue Two's 160 pages is Japan and for this reason we are planting one tree in County Clare for every copy that we sell. This is the heart of Backwash, what is left behind when the wave recedes.
