Direction Of Travel #1

Direction of Travel is a newspaper about airline maps and the culture of flying.

Airlines have been charting their networks since the birth of powered flight, but their maps have been a little overlooked. I hope to remedy this somewhat. The first Volume of Direction of Travel covers two of the most prolific map publishers, United Airlines and American Airlines. I have included a selection of their most interesting maps, published between the late 1930s and the late 1970s.

This edition includes a brief overview of the history of both American Airlines and United Airlines and an essay on the history of the inflight map. The back page includes a portrait of Honolulu International Airport.
