Power Mask: The Power of Masks

Curator Walter Van Beirendonck about the phenomenon 'mask' in all its facets

To this day, masks continue to fascinate: where does your own identity stop and a metamorphosis occurs when you put on a mask, how do we deal with the old symbolic and mythical meanings and when do we create new ways to define ourselves, what is accepted and where? start the controversy? Time and again the boundary between tradition and renewal, between revealing and disguising is questioned, making POWERMASK a bridge between past and present, across different cultures.

Ever since his first collections in the 1980s, Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck has been intrigued by masks. His personal fascination with the mask and its impact on a person's identity is reflected in the exhibition and this accompanying catalog POWERMASK in an idiosyncratic and multiple view of the phenomenon mask. He also looks at the role of the mask in the work of visual artists, photographers and fashion designers.
